MIKE GARNER
Mike Garner has a been a member of EMBC for over 34 years, and a follower of Jesus Christ beginning in 1978, when Jesus transformed his life. He has lived in Maryville all his life, for over 71 years.
Mike attended Maryville City schools from elementary to high school. He earned his B.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee and his Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the U.T. College of Law. Mike conducted law practice in Blount County for over 42 years. His legal career included emphasis in real estate transactions, title insurance, wills, estate and probate practice. He retired from law practice in 2018 but continues to be of counsel to the attorneys in the law firm of Garner & Conner PLLC. Mike serves as a deacon at EMBC and has taught and continues to teach Bible studies, Sunday school classes, and various small groups for over 33 years. Along with these ministries, Mike has worked in men’s ministry in discipleship including mentoring men in accountability relationships at EMBC and in the local community.
Mike feels called to serve as a counselor in the Lighthouse Counseling Ministry because he feels God is already using him in counseling others through his various areas of service at EMBC and in the local community. In these past years of service, he believes the Lord has used him to help people to overcome their personal and family struggles through the encouragement of God’s Word, and by showing them Christ’s love and redemption. Mike feels he can help those (especially men) who are struggling with grief, anxiety and family problems.
Other areas of interest in Mike’s life include a passion for music and the worship ministry of EMBC, where he has participated for many years by singing in choir, praise team, and other music ministries. Mike also enjoys hiking and quality time with his wife, Kim, their daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. One of Mike’s favorite scriptures is 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-control.” This scripture has encouraged Mike countless times to believe God and His provision for him, rather than believing the lies of the world system, the flesh and the devil. Mike believes that the truth of Scripture can be life-changing for God’s glory and for the benefit of those receiving the ministry of counseling.
